[ARCHIVED] Don’t cook yourself this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, according to the National Fire Prevention Association. On Thanksgiving of 2015, American fire companies responded to 1,760 home cooking fires – more than any other day of the year – followed by Christmas. In the case of Thanksgiving, unattended cooking was far and away the leading factor in fires and fire fatalities. The Association is particularly wary of turkey fryers, which can lead to major blazes the moment the turkey goes into the unit’s boiling oil. The organization strongly encourages residents to keep kitchen floors clear of tripping hazards including toys, purses and power cords.
