In the opening scene of a prize-winning ten-minute video about the inner workings of Cranberry Township’s wastewater treatment plant, plant manager Mike Sedon steps out of a toilet stall to greet his audience. Over the course of ten minutes, which includes a mock kayak voyage down the Township’s main sewer line, Sedon – sometimes together with his plant colleagues – tours the facility, explaining its water treatment process from beginning to end.
Last month, at its massive annual technical conference in Chicago, the Water Environment Federation – a 36,000 member nonprofit technical and educational organization representing water quality organizations all over the world – awarded the video, entitled “Dirty Jobs, Cranberry Style” – top honors in its Operations category as well as a tie for first place in the People’s Choice Awards category.
More than 40 video ideas and 22 finished productions were submitted to the competition which served as part of the association’s Interactive Knowledge Exchange session highlighting the water industry’s best practices.
