A proposed lease from PennEnergy Resources, LLC to extract subsurface oil and gas from beneath 311 acres of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course over five years was approved with extensive modifications by the Township at the December 11 meeting of Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors. Gas extraction from the well would be accomplished by way of horizontal drilling from a proposed well site in neighboring Beaver County. The lease specifically bars any surface activity or disturbance on the affected acreage, and Audubon International has assured the Township that subsurface extraction would not affect Cranberry Highland’s coveted sanctuary certification. The lease provides for an initial payment to the Township of $3,000 per acre plus a 17% royalty for gas taken and sold from beneath the property.
